My Rule of Introductions

I have a simple rule for introductions:  please only introduce someone to me if you’ve cleared it with me beforehand.  The result is a much better introduction (pre-warmed the oven so to speak) and it avoids any kind of awkward situations.

If you’ve made an introduction to me, you know I follow this rule as I’m not bashful in letting people know about it.

I created this rule because I was being introduced to people I already know, didn’t care to know, and was too busy to meet new people at a moment in time.  It’s not because I don’t like meeting new people, which is certainly not the case, but it helps me manage my network and relationships.

So, if you’re thinking about making an introduction to someone, not just me, asking the person beforehand will allow for a much better intro.  If the person says no, they’d not like an intro, leave it alone and go onto the next one.

  • +1. I used to violate this rule bc I wanted to get emails out of my inbox faster or was just oblivious but am a big believer now. @fredwilson:disqus also wrote about this a while back http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2009/1...
  • Do I need to clear it with you even if I want to introduce you to my friend "Benjamin Franklin"? ;-)
  • Yes, I might already know him.
  • and his friend George Washington too? They often travel in groups ;-)
