Blog Action Day: The Environmental Conversation

Bloggers Unite - Blog action dayI was doing some research online last night and came across Blog Action Day. Hadn’t heard about it before, so I did some poking around and realized that the day is today… October 15, 2007. Good timing, I thought to myself.

Blog Action Day is when bloggers from all over the world write about one particular topic. In the case of today, the topic is about the environment. I’m interested to read everyone’s points of views from across the world. Folks from GigaOm to Reddit, and smaller bloggers like myself will be talking about this subject.

How much of an impact will today have on the environment? Hopefully, a lot… if us bloggers carefully craft messages that ignite conversations. The creator of the Internet, err, I mean Nobel Prize winner Al Gore has spend a lot of time and money educating the world about the global climate which has been debated back and forth a million times (or more). For each debate, multiple conversations start… and when conversations start, the topic of the environment rises in prominance.

Can we save the rainforest, increase air quality, and preserve the National Parks today? No. But for each conversation that we start, we hope that someone that wasn’t aware of the issues take notice and they start caring. It only takes one more additional person than yesterday to take note and the conversation will eventually become great enough where it’s top of mind to everyone. We live in a world that we don’t control. The environment provides us the luxury to live and be free; so why not take care of it? This is probably the most political I’ve been on this blog and I’ll stop here while I’m ahead.

From a marketing perspective, I’m interested to see how many blogs participate in this action day. As of when I signed up (last night), there were:

Total number of blogs: 15,213
Combined rss reach of blogs: 12,565,172

That’s not a bad reach… there are 12,565,172 RSS subscribers, probably 20-40% are duplicated, so at least 7M people will see the message. I’m proud I can help!
