Darren,

The good news is that you are almost certainly a spam tactic victim, as Andrew described, and NOT the owner of a hacked account. I happen to know from personal experience that the ceiling on outbound gmails for a single account in a 24h period is 500. One of our partners is seeing the same spam coming in through Outlook, we discussed it this AM and came to the same conclusion (spam not a hack).

I think you're the victim of a new spam tactic I've been noticing. The bounce notices are spoofed. They're designed to get my anti-spam software/routers by pretending to be a bounce, when in fact they are actually a bounce for an email that never existed in the first place. As the user closely inspects the bounce, the spammer is getting attention for this product (in this case, a penis enlargement thing).

I've had this happen to me too (although never with 5k emails). Gmail monitors all outbound mail and drops copies in "Sent Mail" (even via POP access), so if you're not seeing the original emails in your "Sent Mail" label, then they never existed in the first place.

Hope that helps.

are you sure they didn't just spoof your address (i.e. joe job)? i think (as an IT professional) hosting your own domain is not necessarily any safer. you think your own server is going to have better security (firewall, patches, IDS) than google? it will still be easily exploited by a determined hacker. for that matter, you can get a virus or trojan on your desktop that sends someone your outlook PST file.

i've had my own domain for a while and I recently switched from my own server to Google Apps for your domain. It's awesome. I wouldn't trade the ease of administration, power of features, etc for the mirage of security.

just my $.02.

Darren - that really is scary - did you contact gmail at all? What did they say? I've never heard of something like this on a platform so large, and think this can affect so many people (which actually creates a great opportunity). do you believe your password was compromised through you or through a security breach at gmail?
