Hey, Darren,

This is somewhat related.

Just got off the phone with a corporate client (global) who wanted to talk about "social networking" tools to help with a couple of initiatives.

One of the potential issues was, given a particular project, who could join into "the group" conversation. While there aren't issues of wanting to exclude people out of hand, the real point was keeping one level of conversation for the "principals" in the group, another level for "commenters," and yet another for those who just want to be organizational voyeurs in order to stay on top of things.

Without realizing it, I think we were touching on your notion of social layers.

Thanks for providing a way to view and think about the issue.

I wouldn't mind adding people I know through business to my Facebook friend's list as long as they understand that the reason I (and most everybody I know) use the site is for SOCIAL - not professional - networking. It ticks me off when people use their personal Facebook profiles as a means to broadcast constant news updates on their business ventures. If you want to use Facebook as a way for us to get to know each other on an outside work level - that's cool. But using the instruments provided by a personal profile (news updates, questions, etc...) as a promotional tool for your latest schemes is social networking spam.

So: "This doesn’t mean just college or highschool kids, this means everyone." I understand that. I don't mind connecting to all types of people on Facebook. It's the character of the interactions I do on Facebook that I care about. The geezers are ruining my Facebook experience. I'm ignoring all future requests from business contacts. [end rant]

Orkut does have 'friend layers' already but i haven't seen it replicated in other social networking sites. I also like how they have 3 faces to your profile (social, professional, personal). I like a lot of their features but no one i know uses it so it's useless.

Agree completely. I think you should read this post by Sarah Cooper of Yahoo! It's about "Independent George" and "Relationship George." In your case "Darren the Friend" and "Darren the Entrepreneur." The first social network who does this will win my attention:
