Domain Names

GoDaddyI have to admit, I’m a sucker for domain names.  They are impulse purchases to me.  If I come up with a business idea in my head, I quickly go to GoDaddy and register as many domain names related to that idea as possible.  99% of the time, I don’t do anything with them and end up collecting cyber dust.

Are they a good investment however?  I’d argue…yes.  Domain names are your name on the web.  Whilst search engines don’t send you to domain names, rather websites, they are how people relate to you after search.  It’s your brand, it’s your identity.  I believe that great domains hold significant value as domain names are timeless.

How do you value a domain name?  Good question.  If you do a quick search on Google for “domain name value“, you’ll turn up 67,200,000 listings.   I believe that domain names are like baseball cards.  They are only worth what someone is willing to pay… just like any asset in the world.  I have a Shaquille Oneill signed rookie card (official) and my basketball card magazine says it’s worth $2,200, but unless someone offers me that, it’s worth close to nothing.

Domain names are impulse purchases to me as I stated above, so I seem to amass domains.  I noticed that DNFolio offers high quality domain names at great prices and have been a sucker over there over the past few days as I like the way that Jeff offers and vets his domains.   Will I setup a site to resell them?  No clue.  However, if the rate I’m acquiring domains keeps up, I’m going to have one heck of a collection… rivaling my baseball card collection!
