Digital Tidbits (news & notes)

I have a bunch of small ramblings so I figured I’d lump them all together here in a little section entitled Digital Tidbits.

  • I was in Circuit City yesterday in Union Square yesterday afternoon, waiting on line to pay for a bunch of video games and there were 9 people of all race, size, shape, gender, etc in front of me.  6 of the 9 people had webcams in their hand that they were buying and it wasn’t just the teens in line.  Makes you wonder about video & the web.
  • SearchBlox - does anyone know anything about them?  Would love to speak with someone who has used/implemented their search platfrom as I loaded it onto a Mac OS X box last night and tested it… ran smoothly.
  • I had a drink with a friend who is fairly senior at a rather large media company in their M&A department and we were discussing valuations.  He raised a good point:  with all of these startups raising rounds of funding at inflated/high valuations, it actually lowers the amount of potential exit opportunities as only a handful of players can really afford extremely high valuationsInteresting.
  • OvernightPrints.com - terrible service.  I ordered some stuff from OvernightPrints, had paid for rush/overnight shipping ($50!), and had all of my order information submitted on time to have everything within 48 hours.  I needed this order for an event I’m attending this weekend up at Skidmore in Saratoga Springs.  Turns out that they processed my credit card late and that I would not receive the order until Tuesday of next week (earliest).  I followed all of the rules/tips on their website to a “t” and still got hosed.  Not happy.  Spoke to customer service and still wasn’t pleased.
  • My brother Kenny has recently graduated University at Albany and accepted a dream job at a video network startup… congrats Kenny!  Guess this startup bug runs in the family?  More to come in the next few weeks about the company.
  • On Mindpetals.com, David wrote a thought intriguing blog posting asking the question, “How much money would it take for you to stop being an entrepreneur.”  For me, it’s not about the money, it’s about the creativity, expression,  and freedom.

I like that last question. Last night Craig Newmark told the Social Media Club that his exit strategy for Craigslist was “death” and the only thing he doesn’t have in his life that he really desires is a good humming bird feeder in his back yard.
    That’s a (social) entrepreneur’s answer!

I agree on that last point. It’s moot– an entrepreneur would simply see additional money as a means towards taking on more ambitious projects!
