Your goal as an entrepreneur is to avoid venture capital.

It just comes with too many restrictions and headaches.

Good article.

Good post. Entrepreneurs labor under many misconceptions about venture capital—one of the most grievous being that it's in any way, shape, or form right for their business. :-) For the vast majority of start-ups, chasing VCs is a complete waste of time. There are better ways to build a business.

Keep up the good work. I'm adding you to my blogroll.

[...] On the other hand, if a company is losing money hand over fist and has nothing to show for it, why would someone want to invest in them? There is a myth surfacing about how the goal of entrepreneurship is to get funding… And frankly, that disturbs me.
Darren,

Thanks for pointing this out. I personally have never received VC funding but have toyed with the idea. I also believe that VC is not the end all to an entreprenuers troubles. I think that more entrepreneurs need to focus on developing an idea that generates income and is sustainable. With the recent blowup of YouTube and Facebook too many have been trying to be the next big thing.

Being the next big thing is great and don't stop trying but don't over look just being successful. Most entrepeneurs who are successful and make millions are never achieve the next big thing status or receive VC but are still able to create sustainable and profitable businesses.
